OUR STORY
Inspired by President Dwight Eisenhower’s 1956 Sister Cities International initiative to promote international peace, understanding, and exchange through citizen diplomacy, the Kansas City Sister Cities was founded as a 501(c)(3) non-profit to coordinate such relationships.
The Kansas City Sister Cities program began in 1967 with the first partnership with Seville, Spain, and has since grown to include 13 sister cities, with the most recent being Metz, France, in June 2025.
The Association exists to assist the City of Kansas City, Missouri by supporting and promoting international cooperation and understanding between the City’s official Sister Cities, through innovative programs through innovative programs in commerce, tourism, education and cultural awareness in cooperation with the Association’s member Sister City Committees.
The Sister Cities International Bridge, built in 2000, commemorates these relationships and features plaques for each sister city.
